Start by downloading the heart shaped template, or drawing your own shape onto card or paper. Click Here to download the template from our website (there are NO seam allowances on the pattern).
Position your chosen fabric WRONG side facing up. Using chalk or a removable pen draw around the heart template. If you are working with a patterned fabric, be sure to place the template straight on the fabric (line up the grainline on the template with the pattern on the fabric). If you are working with a bold print, consider the area of the pattern that you wish to see on the finished heart; this is totally up to you!
If you are working with our template, be sure to mark the notches onto the fabric. We will NOT sew between the notches, you must leave room to turn the heart around (to the RIGHT side) after sewing.
Our pattern does not come with seam allowances, you will need to add these. Draw seam allowances of 5mm around the drawn shape.
Cut out the fabric on the outside line.
Complete for 2 pieces of fabric; you will need 2 pieces of fabric for each heart you wish to make. When creating the second side of the heart if you are working with a patterned fabric think about your pattern placement, do you want the second side to look the same as the first or different?
Position the cut out hearts RIGHT sides together. Start by pinning the point at the bottom of the heart together. Pin along the outline of the template.
Check when pinning that the pins come through on the drawn line on both layers of fabric, this will help with accurate sewing.
Prepare a piece of ribbon that will allow you to hang the heart when finished. We chose a piece of double sided satin ribbon that was 5mm wide. Cut a length of ribbon that measures 15cm.
Fold the ribbon in half.
The ribbon must sit BETWEEN the two layers of fabric. The raw edges of the ribbon should line up with the raw edges of the fabric. This will put the folded edge of the ribbon into the middle of the fabric. This can be confusing but remember that once sewn we will turn the heart around (to the RIGHT side) and the folded edge (of the ribbon) will be on the outside.
Should you require a bit of extra help, please check out our corresponding YouTube video.
Continue pinning the two pieces of fabric together, along the drawn line. Pin the ribbon in position securely.
Sew around the heart on the drawn line using a 1.5mm stitch length for reinforcement. Stop and start at the notches, fasten the stitch using a back-stitch. Be sure to leave a gap between the two notches, this will be required to turn the heart around.
Once the sewing is complete. Trim the seam allowance to 3mm.
Do NOT trim the area between the two notches, this must be left alone so that it does not fray.
We recommend that you do NOT trim the ribbon, but the seam allowances of the fabric can be trimmed either side. This will prevent the ribbon from fraying and coming out of the seam at a later stage.
Cut off the point at the bottom of the heart, this will produce a better finish when you turn the fabric around.
Turn the heart around to the RIGHT side. Poke out all of the corners using a point turner or cocktail stick to create a nice heart shape.
If you have been working with a removable pen, now is the time to remove the pen.
Using polyester toy stuffing stuff the heart. Be sure to compact the stuffing into all of the curves and points to create an even finish. If you wish to add lavender to the heart we recommend adding this gradually with the stuffing; you do not need much to produce a nice scent.
Once you are happy with the shape of the heart turn under the seam allowances at the opening and pin the edge closed. Complete a slip-stitch, ladder stitch to fastening the hole.
Congratulations hopefully you have been able to follow the tutorial and create some beautiful hanging hearts that you can use to decorate your house.

Made my first purchase for my business, Cathrin Brodie Ltd. Excellent and speedy service, great range of products and competitive prices. One item was missed from the order but that was dealt with and resolved very speedily. I have no hesitation in recommending this business and I will certainly be back!
I was searching for a difficult to find product, Adam from William Gee was incredibly helpful and not only pointed me to the item in stock but also changed the minimum order so it was more appropriate to my needs, thank you that was really excellent! Once ordered the product arrived promptly and as advertised.
Not only do William Gee have an amazing amount of products at great prices their customer experience must be second to none! I placed my order at about lunchtime and it was in my house in Derbyshire by 8.15am the next day! Thank you.
Brilliantly helpful staff, quick to respond to emails and to ship. Helped me find specific items not on the website and very easy to deal with and process.
Will continue to use for future business purchases!
Excellent service - William Gee supplied thread for curtain making that I had struggled to find elsewhere and for a fraction of the price of the few suppliers I had managed to find elsewhere. Delivery was fast and reasonably priced. Would recommend and will be shopping there again. Thank you.
I placed an order for some haberdashery items. They arrived well packed and secure so there was no damage; and, earlier than I expected to receive them. Good quality products, will definitely be ordering again. Thank you very much!
Placed an order online to collect, was ready quickly and they called to tell me so. Through browsing online store it is probably the best stocked haberdashery in the uk, stocking harder to find and a lot of items for designers. Will definatly be using again.
I placed my first order recently and I was very pleased with my purchases. Everything was as described, the quality was outstanding and it was all affordable. Their wide range of haberdashery is the best I've come across. I'll definitely be back for another haul.
I visited WilliamGee store today. I am a new starter in sewing, so I had just a paper with a list of unknown words to me. Effie, the sales assistant, was very helpful, indeed. She explained to me what I needed for and replied friendly to my queries. So, I easily found all I needed and I am happy! I will definitely recommend this place.
Excellent service provided by this family run business. Not only are the prices superb but the delivery time is swift too. I shall be definitely using William Gee again and have recommended them to all of my 'stitchy' friends!
A fantastic place for all haverdashery needs. I've been buying from this company for years. Excellent customer service, responds promptly to any issues. Shopping online is easy, but the shop is always worth visiting.
Placed my first online order with William Gee for my small sewing business. Web site very easy to navigate and use, good quality products and very speedy delivery. Very happy customer, I will be ordering again. Thank you.
Incredible sewing and craft shop, reminds me of long established sewing shops in Manchester growing up in the 80s. It's not a massive shop but they have everything you could ever want at very competitive prices. I also love their bargain bundles and bags.Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful too. I have done both click and collect online and bought from the shop in person, both great experiences but if you're easily tempted I advise the former option.
