The Essential Finishing Touch for Every Shirt – Classic Replacement Buttons for Shirts & Blouses
Never let a missing button ruin a perfectly good garment. Our Classic 4-Hole Shirt Buttons are the industry standard for dress shirts, casual blouses, and school uniforms. Featuring a smooth, polished finish and a subtle rim, these buttons provide a clean, professional look that blends seamlessly with any fabric.
Designed for both hand-sewing and machine application, the 4-hole construction offers superior security compared to 2-hole alternatives. This makes them ideal for high-wear areas like shirt fronts and cuffs, ensuring your buttons stay exactly where they belong through repeated washing and daily use.

How to Sew a 4-Hole Shirt Button Like a Pro!
A loose or missing button doesn’t have to mean the end of your favorite shirt. Following the “Parallel” or “Cross” method ensures a secure hold and a factory-standard finish.
What You’ll Need:
- A William Gee 4-Hole Shirt Button
- Matching thread (all-purpose polyester or cotton)
- A sharp hand-sewing needle
- Small scissors
- A toothpick or matchstick (the “pro secret” for creating a thread shank)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Thread
Cut about 18 inches of thread and thread your needle. Double the thread and tie a secure knot at the end. Doubling the thread provides extra strength so the button won’t pop off again.
2. Mark Your Spot
If the old button fell off, you should see small holes or thread remnants. Remove the old thread and pass your needle through the fabric from the back to the front at the exact center of where the button will sit.
3. The “Toothpick” Secret (Creating a Shank)
Place your button on the fabric and pull the needle through one hole. Before you continue, place a toothpick or matchstick across the top of the button.
Why? This creates a “thread shank”—a small gap between the button and the fabric. Without this, your button will be too tight, making it difficult to fasten the shirt.
4. Choose Your Stitch Pattern
-
The Parallel Method (Most Common): Sew up and down through two holes, then move to the other two holes. This creates two parallel bars ( = ).
-
The Cross Method: Sew diagonally across the holes to create an “X”. This is often more secure for heavy-duty wear.
-
Repeat the stitch through each pair of holes 4–5 times.
5. Secure the Shank
On your final stitch, bring the needle up through the fabric but not through the button. Remove the toothpick. Wrap your thread tightly around the bundle of threads underneath the button 3–4 times. This creates a sturdy “neck” that protects the threads from friction.
6. Knot and Finish
Push the needle through to the back of the fabric. Create a small knot by catching a tiny bit of fabric and pulling the thread through the loop. Tighten, trim the excess, and you’re done!
Quick Maintenance Tips:
-
Check the tension: If the button is hard to push through the buttonhole, your shank was too short.
-
Reinforce: If you’re sewing onto a very thin fabric, sew a small scrap of fabric or a “backing button” on the inside of the shirt for extra support.
