YouTube is a great resource for instructional videos, which I use all the time if I need a bit of guidance on a sewing or knitting technique. But beyond tutorials, there’s also a whole world of craft-loving YouTube podcasters out there.
I love finding inspiration from other sewists, and watching podcasts is a great way to learn from others. Nothing gets me out of a sewing slump like watching an episode!
I sit down with a cup of tea, see what they’ve been making, and hear all the ups and downs of their sewing, knitting or craft projects. It’s like catching up with a friend. Here’s a little list of some of my favourites:
Sydney Graham @HiSydGraham
Sydney Graham is an independent pattern designer and maker, often using simple shapes and patchwork to create beautiful, wearable clothes. She films from her lovely US studio, and shares a mixture of tutorials, chats and reviews of handmade outfits.
Making Cassie @MakingCassie
Cassie’s channel was one of the first I subscribed to when I discovered the world of sewing YouTubers. I loved her honest pattern reviews, and I discovered lots of independent sewing pattern designers through her videos. She’s taking a bit of a step back from making videos now, but all of her lovely episodes are available to watch on her channel, and she also shares makes on instagram.
Lydia Naomi @LydiaNaomi
You might know Lydia from her fun sewing pattern designs (e.g. the Milkmaid Dress), but she also has a YouTube Channel where she shares tutorials (some for free patterns, some paid), along with tips and ideas.
Orchid’s Heart @OrchidsHeart
Orchid’s Heart is such a cosy watch for me – I really recommend this one if you love a range of crafts, such as knitting, sewing and quilting. Her relaxed style is perfect for a cosy afternoon of hand-stitching, and a lovely way to get creative ideas for your own projects.
Bernadette Banner @BernadetteBanner
If you love period costumes and sewing, then look no further than Bernadette Banner! Bernadette shares costume analysis and fashion history – it’s great fun and ranges from film costume reviews to historical stitching techniques.
Thread and Yarn @ThreadandYarn
I’m sneaking in my own channel here! I love using YouTube to catch up with other makers, and have made some wonderful connections since starting my podcast a few years ago. I share sewing, knitting and quilting makes, along with videos on natural dyeing and my dye garden/allotment. I’m told they’re a cosy watch.
I hope you enjoy watching these channels!
