The Merchant and Mills Workbook is more than just a sewing book; it is a masterclass in creating a cohesive, stylish, and functional wardrobe.
Centred around the idea of “slow fashion,” this book provides six classic patterns designed to be adapted and layered.
From the versatile Haremere jacket to the elegant Bantam vest, each pattern embodies the brand’s signature utilitarian-chic aesthetic. The Workbook guides you through construction with clear instructions and beautiful photography that inspires the creative process.
Full-size patterns are provided:Â a neat vest with a boxer back detail, an elegant bias-cut long-sleeved dress, a simple long gathered skirt with a drawstring waist, a batwing wrap top, an oversized drop-shoulder jacket and a pair of classic wide leg trousers. There are also style variations within 4 of the patterns. The aim of this book is to move beyond simplicity and dare the maker to develop new skills.
It also delves into the philosophy of making, offering advice on fabric selection—emphasising natural fibres like linen, wool, and cotton—and garment care. The patterns are provided on full-size pull-out sheets, making it easy to get started right away.
Whether you are an intermediate sewist or a beginner ready for a challenge, this book offers a roadmap to a more intentional way of dressing. It encourages you to move away from disposable fashion and towards a wardrobe built with your own hands.
