Bring the timeless Merchant and Mills aesthetic into every room with the Merchant and Mills House Book. This volume focuses on the domestic sphere, offering a curated selection of sewing projects designed to enhance your living space with practical beauty.

HOUSE is a collection of inspirations, ideas and patterns for the home. This book was born out of the success of our PDF pattern bundle The Grove Creations. The Grove Creations contains patterns for the home that we designed while renovating The Grove, the Merchant & Mills house in Rye.

In addition to the original patterns, the book contains new and unseen patterns and an exploration into the importance of handmade in the home: Carolyn shares the story of The Grove and the process of renovating and designing a home around our fabrics; we share an interview with Victoria Barker of Faeger, an interior designer and an expert in creating both residential and commercial spaces that put handmade in the spotlight; we talk about why we champion natural fibres in both our homes and wardrobes, not only as a more conscious and sustainable option but also a practical and beautiful one.

“Designing The Grove was the catalyst to create a small collection of patterns that would work together to form a handmade home. These designs are scattered throughout The Grove, in different rooms and environments. They are an easy way to change up your space without the great expense of a renovation or large investment pieces.

Soft furnishings are a brilliant way to develop your sewing skills and start experimenting with textiles. When designing the projects, I thought about simple makes for all skill levels, including those who maybe wouldn’t attempt to make their own clothes but could start with a cushion or a topper. In this book we will work through the patterns, adding new techniques as you gain confidence.” – Carolyn Denham

The instructions for seven sewing patterns live inside, illustrated by inspiring photographs of each pattern made up in signature Merchant & Mills cloth:

Simple Envelope Cushion
Cushion Cover with Zip
Peek A Boo Cushion
Bolster Cover
Quilt & Sofa/Bed Topper
Relaxed Blind
Duvet Set

From simple, well-tailored cushions and sturdy aprons to more complex items like curtains and bed linens, the House Book applies the brand’s utilitarian philosophy to home textiles. Each project emphasises the use of natural, high-quality fabrics like heavy canvas and soft linen.

The book provides clear instructions and patterns, making it accessible for sewists of various skill levels. Beyond the projects, it serves as inspiration for a more considered, handmade home, where every item has a purpose and a story to tell.

“The photography is evocative and atmospheric, showcasing how simple, well-made textile items can transform a space. For those who love the Merchant and Mills style, this book is the perfect guide to extending that craftsmanship to your home environment.”
