France bans super skinny models from the runways

The issue of emaciated models has long since been a topic of discussion in the fashion world, and now France has taken a massive step in the right direction (one that will hopefully promote a healthy and positive body image), by passing a law that will ban the use of models who are deemed too skinny.

The legislation requires models to prove that they have a BMI of at least 18. According to Reuters, the bill declares “the activity of model is banned for any person whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is lower than levels proposed by health authorities and decreed by the ministers of health and labor.”

Those designers and agencies that ignore this law and continue to use super skinny models will be dealt with accordingly and could face fines of around 75,000 Euros (around 55,000 Pounds) and serve up to six months in jail.

It will be interesting to see what happens during Paris Fashion Week in September, and whether this law will be enforced.
